WHAT IS A NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION?
A neuropsychological evaluation should be comprehensive and individually tailored to each adult, adolescent, and child . That is, it needs to not only assess general IQ and academic skills, but also expressive and receptive language skills, executive functioning, processing speed, visuomotor skills, social comprehension, memory and learning, and emotional/behavioral functioning.
The goal of this evaluation is to assess cognitive functioning to determine the presence and / or extent of deficits, identify etiologic source of observed neuropsychological symptoms, and provide potential medication and behavioral treatment. For pediatric evaluations educational recommendations will also be included. Evaluations typically consist of 3 to 6 hours of testing depending on the question. An evaluation will include a clinical interview, review of previous records, and face to face testing.
In order to prepare for your evaluation you should get plenty of rest the night before and bring any corrective lens or hearing aides to your appointment. It is also important to bring you any previous evaluations or pertinent medical records. Lastly, for pediatric patients a parent will participate in the clinical interview and for adults patients, especially older patients, bringing a family member is encouraged.
